"No Más" (Spanish for "No More") is a phrase most famously associated with the boxing match between Roberto Durán and Sugar Ray Leonard on November 25, 1980, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.
During the eighth round of the fight, Durán, seemingly in good physical condition, turned away from Leonard and quit, saying "No más" to the referee. This immediately handed the victory to Leonard by a technical knockout.
The reason behind Durán's abrupt surrender has been debated ever since. Initially, it was rumored that Durán was suffering from stomach cramps or muscular pain, aggravated by trying to quickly lose weight before the weigh-in, and the consumption of a drink shortly before the fight. However, Durán initially refused to elaborate on the exact reason for his quitting, leading to widespread criticism and accusations of cowardice.
Over time, Durán has offered various explanations, including blaming a stomach ailment, claiming he was exhausted, and alleging that Leonard was taunting him in the ring. Regardless of the precise cause, the "No Más" incident remains one of the most controversial and talked-about moments in boxing history, forever associating the phrase with surrender and unexpected defeat. The event significantly impacted Durán's reputation, despite his previous accomplishments as a legendary boxer.
